Summer Hair Care: How to Protect Your Hair from Sun, Chlorine & Salt

There's nothing I love more about summer than being outside — long mornings in the garden, weekends at the lake, the farmers market in full swing. But every July, without fail, someone stops by my booth with the same complaint: their hair has gone dry, brittle, and dull, and they can't figure out why. The answer is almost always the same three culprits — the sun, the pool, and the ocean.

As an herbalist, I think about hair the way I think about skin: it's living tissue, and it responds both to what we put it through and to what we feed it. The good news is that protecting your hair through the summer isn't complicated, and it doesn't take a shelf full of synthetic products. A little understanding and a few good habits make all the difference. Here's how I help my customers — and myself — keep our hair healthy and shining from June through September.

What summer actually does to your hair

Before we talk about protecting your hair, it helps to understand what you're protecting it from. Three things are working against your strands all season:

The sun. Just like it does to your skin, prolonged sun exposure breaks down the protein structure of your hair and strips away the natural oils that keep it soft. The result is dryness, a rough or straw-like texture, more split ends, and — if your hair is light or color-treated — faded, brassy color.

Chlorine. Pool chemicals are harsh by design. Chlorine strips your hair of its natural oils and binds to the proteins in each strand, leaving hair dry and brittle. It's especially hard on lighter and blonde hair, where it can even create a greenish tint.

Salt water. A dip in the ocean feels wonderful, but salt is a dehydrator. It pulls moisture out of the hair, lifts the cuticle, and leaves strands rough, tangled, and far more fragile than usual — which is why post-beach detangling can feel like such a battle.

None of this means you have to stay out of the water. A single beach day won't ruin your hair. It's the repeated exposure, without protection or aftercare, that adds up over a summer into real dryness and breakage. The whole game is reducing how much damage gets in, and replacing the moisture that gets pulled out.

1. Seal the cuticle before you swim

A little Marshmallow Root Leave-in before sun and water means far less tangling after.

The single most effective thing you can do happens before you get in the water. Dry hair behaves like a sponge — it will soak up whatever it touches first. So if you saturate your hair with clean, fresh water before you swim, there's simply less room left for it to absorb salt or chlorine.

I'll be honest with you — I know I should wet my hair before every swim, and I'm still not always the best at remembering. So the habit I never skip is sealing in a layer of moisture and slip with my Marshmallow Root Leave-in Conditioner. Marshmallow root is rich in a gel-like substance called mucilage that coats each strand, adds slip, and helps hold moisture in place — exactly what you want standing between your hair and a pool full of chlorine.

How I use it: Before a pool or beach day, I work a little Marshmallow Root Leave-in Conditioner through my hair, focusing on the ends — the oldest, most fragile part. It creates a light barrier and means far less tangling when I get out. It's small enough to throw in a beach bag, so I can reapply on the go.

2. Rinse the moment you're out of the water

Salt and chlorine keep damaging your hair long after you've left the water, as they sit and dry on the strands. The fix is simple: rinse as soon as you can. If you're not near a shower, even a quick rinse from a water bottle at the beach makes a real difference — you're washing away the salt and chlorine before they crystallize and set in.

This is the one habit I'm religious about in my own routine. Done consistently, it prevents more summer damage than any product on the market.

3. Cleanse gently — never strip

Simply Wild Lavender & Lemongrass — shampoo and conditioner made to be used as a pair.

Here's where summer hair care goes wrong for a lot of people. Their hair feels dry and gunky from sweat, sunscreen, and chlorine, so they reach for a harsh, sulfate-heavy shampoo to scrub it all out. But those detergents strip away the natural oils your hair desperately needs in the summer, and you end up drier than when you started.

What your hair needs is a shampoo that genuinely cleans without stripping — which is the whole philosophy behind how I formulate. I make my Simply Wild Shampoo and Conditioner in three complementing pairs, designed to be used together, so you can choose the one that fits your hair:

  • Lavender & Lemongrass — my blend for thick and curly hair (and my best-seller).
  • Holy Basil & Rose — a lighter formula for fine and straight hair.
  • Scalp Restore — for anyone whose scalp needs a little extra attention.

How I use it: In the summer I wash with whichever pair suits your hair, and always shampoo and condition together — they're made to work as a set. If you've had a heavy week in the pool and feel real buildup, do one slightly deeper cleanse to clear it, then follow right away with moisture so you're never leaving your hair stripped and bare.

4. Put the moisture back — deeply

Simply Wild Clay Pomade — seals moisture into the ends
Clay Pomade seals moisture into the driest, most fragile ends — a pea-sized amount is all you need.

Everything summer does to your hair comes back to one thing: lost moisture. So the other half of the equation is putting it back, generously and often.

This is where the right oils and herbs earn their place. My conditioners are built around nourishing oils chosen for each hair type — argan, avocado, and olive oils with marshmallow root and nettle in the Lavender & Lemongrass blend for thick and curly hair; lighter jojoba, grapeseed, and argan in the Holy Basil & Rose for fine hair. They restore the softness and shine that the sun and salt pull out.

"I've struggled with frizz, breakage, and dry curls for years. This shampoo and conditioner have made my hair feel softer, healthier, and much easier to manage without weighing my curls down." — Christina

My real summer hero, though, is the Marshmallow Root Leave-in Conditioner. It's the easiest way to add moisture back into your hair, it doesn't weigh your hair down, and it throws right in a beach bag to take on the go. I reach for it constantly in the summer, especially after I've been out in the sun for a while.

"Great leave-in conditioner for thick dry hair. Definitely recommend." — Javier

And don't forget the ends. To seal moisture into the driest, most fragile part of your hair — and add a little style — I love my Clay Pomade. It's made with shea butter, castor oil, and beeswax to add back and seal in moisture at the ends, and like the leave-in, it's perfectly sized to keep in your bag. A pea-sized amount is all you need.

Once a week, give your hair an extra-generous conditioning treatment as a simple deep-conditioning ritual to replace everything summer pulled out.

5. Give your scalp some love

The one spot almost everyone forgets is the scalp. The part line and hairline take direct sun all day, and a sunburned scalp is genuinely miserable. On top of that, summer sweat, sunscreen, and chlorine all collect at the roots and can leave the scalp feeling heavy and out of balance.

Two simple moves help. First, give your scalp a physical break from the sun — a wide-brimmed hat, a scarf, or a loose braid that tucks the part away. Second, keep the scalp clean and refreshed without overwashing.

How I use it: When my scalp feels heavy with summer buildup, I reach for my Scalp Restore pair, made with rosemary, tea tree, and eucalyptus. It loosens buildup and leaves the scalp feeling clean, cooled, and refreshed — a small thing that makes a long, hot summer day a lot more comfortable.

A simple summer hair routine

If you take nothing else from this article, take these few habits. They cost almost nothing and they protect your hair more than any single product can:

Before the water: Rinse with fresh water and add a layer of slip with the leave-in conditioner through the ends.

Right after the water: Rinse again, immediately, to clear salt and chlorine before they set.

Wash day: Cleanse gently — never strip — with a shampoo and conditioner pair, and always follow with deep moisture.

Once a week: Give your hair an extra-generous conditioning treatment to replace everything summer pulled out.

All season: Cover your scalp when you can, drink plenty of water, and go easy on the heat tools. Summer is the perfect time to let your hair air-dry and embrace its natural texture.

The Simply Wild difference

Every hair product I make starts the same way the rest of my line does — with whole plants and patience. I work with organic, plant-based ingredients: marshmallow root, nettle, rosemary, and nourishing oils chosen for each hair type, with gentle botanicals that clean and condition without the harsh detergents and synthetics most commercial hair products rely on.

There are no sulfates stripping your hair raw, no petroleum products, no silicones that coat your strands and slowly build up. Just plants — handcrafted in small batches in my Kansas City kitchen.

Summer is hard on hair, but it doesn't have to undo it. With a little protection going in and a little moisture coming back out, you can spend all the time you want in the sun and water and still have hair that feels soft, looks shiny, and stays healthy all season long.

If your hair has had a long day in the sun, the plants are ready to bring it back.
